In October 1996 the space at 433 Brunswick Street was no longer available and the Archives made what was to be a temporary move of part of its collection to the basement at the Victorian AIDS Council’s building at 6 Claremont St. South Yarra on the 13 November. In the meantime other parts of the collection were spread across the homes of ALGA members.
On the 14 December 2008 ALGA and the VAC formalised ALGA’s occupancy of both the basement and space on the first floor of 6 Claremont St. South Yarra with a Memorandum of Understanding. Over time the space occupied by ALGA was equipped with purpose-built shelving (December 2009), a custom-built 32-bay compactus (September 2010) and plan cabinets (June 2011).
In 2016 the VAC granted ALGA additional basement space, providing an opportunity to consolidate the growing collection and the space was fitted out with shelving in September. Even then, overflow from the collection was stored at the homes of Graham Carbery, Gary Jaynes and other ALGA members.
