Description
This poster was a fundraiser by the Queensland Association for Gay Law Reform (QAGLR) at the new Brisbane nightclub Manhattan. QAGLR sought the repeal of all Queensland laws discriminating against homosexuals and new legislation be enacted to protect Queenslanders from discrimination on the grounds of sexual preference. While other states in Australia began to liberalise their anti-homosexuality laws in the 1970s and 1980s, Queensland was ruled by the socially conservative National Party of Joh Bjelke-Petersen. QAGLR’s activism and the election of the Labor Government in 1989, led to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in December 1990.
