Kendall (Ken) Lovett’s Moral Majority overlay
-
Description
In 1982 American conservative Christian lobbyist, televangelist and ‘Moral Majority’ leader Jerry Falwell toured Australia. In Sydney, Falwell’s visit was met by a coalition of gay and feminist activist groups called the Campaign Against Repression (CAR). CAR and along with activists around Australia, had registered Moral Majority as a business name in each state in advance of Falwell’s visit, producing car stickers with provocative slogans in the distinctive writing of Sydney activist Kendall (Ken) Lovett. These slogans also appeared on a series of overlays or bibs worn during the rally, hand-drawn by Lovett.See also: Timothy Jones’ essay on these bibs in Queer Objects / Chris Brickell and Judith Collard (editors) (Manchester University Press, 2019).
